The project proposes converting approximately 11.4 miles of inactive Seminole Gulf Railway corridor into a multi-use recreational trail. Approximately 5.8 miles of that corridor are located within Bonita Springs.

A trail of this scale could eventually provide another way for residents to walk, bike, exercise, and travel recreationally between parts of Bonita Springs and Estero.

Projects such as BERT also reflect a broader conversation happening across Southwest Florida about connectivity and creating communities where residents have more options for outdoor recreation.

Estero Is Planning for Walkability, Trails and Open Space Too

The Village of Estero accepted its Eco-Historic Planning Study in June 2026. The study encompasses more than 1,000 acres, including the Estero River, portions of the US-41 corridor, historic and conservation areas, publicly owned properties, and the planned BERT corridor.

Community input collected during the planning process showed interest in environmental stewardship and walkable destinations rather than development focused exclusively around automobiles.
